The Philadelphia Phillies entered their series against the Baltimore Orioles at a critical juncture for the pitching staff.
After spending the days leading up to the trade deadline exploring rotation upgrades, the club had also been carefully managing the development of one of baseball’s most closely watched young arms. But that methodical process seemed to take a shocking turn on Friday.
Philadelphia Phillies Make Stunning Andrew Painter Move Just Before Trade Deadline
After opening the season on the big-league roster and then suffering a demotion after a brutal debut, Phillies pitcher Andrew Painter could be poised to make a stunning return to the mound against the Orioles.
“Andrew Painter is in Baltimore,” NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury reported. “Phillies are TBA for tonight’s pitcher.”
Painter’s presence in Baltimore immediately fueled speculation about whether the Phillies were preparing to give the 23-year-old another opportunity in the major leagues, which would be an incredible turn of events given his development up to this point.
“After a disastrous beginning to his major-league career, Painter finally is without the noise, the fanfare that has followed him much of his professional baseball life — from throwing an electric fastball in 2022 to Tommy John surgery to a roller-coaster 2025 in the minors,” The Athletic’s Charlotte Varnes reported earlier on Friday, suggesting the team would be patient with Painter after his demotion. “Producing a 7.06 ERA in 14 games in the majors will do that.”
Philadelphia Phillies Could Be Planning Major Shakeup With Andrew Painter Decision
Even with Painter traveling to Baltimore, the organization has consistently maintained that there is no need to accelerate his timeline unless circumstances change. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has consistently indicated that he sees Painter as a valuable starter of the future, even through his setbacks, and the general thinking was that the team would give him plenty of time to work through his issues away from the big leagues.
“There is no rush to get Painter back to the big leagues, particularly given the Phillies’ pursuit of a fifth starter before the trade deadline,” Varnes added. “They might even pursue a playoff-caliber starter; Painter, 23, is not that. But if he pitches well consistently, or if an injury occurs, he could earn another call-up this season.”
If the Phillies have indeed called him up for Friday’s start against the Orioles, it seems the team could be offering a showcase for other teams ahead of the trade deadline. There seems to be little reason to believe the Phillies suddenly see the young pitcher as their own answer at the back of the rotation this season.
