Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. is set to become a free agent as things stand, with the Brazilian entering the last 12 months of his contract.

The left winger’s terms, which he renewed in 2023, expire on June 30, 2027. This means that on said date in 2026, ‘Vini’ has less than a year to run on his deal at the Bernabeu.

By January 1, 2027, he’ll be free to negotiate with potential suitors if he wishes, as per FIFA rules. Then by the following summer, he can leave Real Madrid in a free transfer that would send shockwaves through soccer.

It’s true that the $51 million (€45 million) Madrid paid Flamengo for the teenager in 2018 has proven to be a bargain.

Over an eight-year tenure, Vinicius has won two Champions Leagues – scoring in both finals in 2022 and 2024 – and three La Liga titles.

He’s also been the Ballon d’Or runner up and the recipient of FIFA’s The Best award, amassing 128 goals across 376 appearances in the Spanish capital.

What also can’t be denied however is the fact that the relationship between Vinicius, President Florentino Perez, and the club’s fans has taken a hit over the last couple of seasons.

Those have finished trophyless for Los Blancos, while bitter rival FC Barcelona has hoovered up five out of the six domestic trophies on offer under Hansi Flick.

Alongside Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, Vinicius has received boos from the demanding Bernabeu which might have pushed him to reconsider his future

Vinicius has always hinted at renewing with Real Madrid

All things considered, Vinicius has always shown a desire to commit the rest of his peak to Real Madrid, when asked about putting pen to paper.

“I enjoy every moment, I want to continue playing here my whole life, but I am also not in a rush to renew my contract,” he recently said, at the end of May.

“We have an agreement until 2027, so until then we have a lot to talk about with Real Madrid, and Real Madrid with us. The club is calm about it, I’m calm, the president trusts me and I trust him.”

At the same time, you don’t have to look far in the Spanish press to find reports of Perez issuing an ultimatum to Vinicius, who is currently lighting up the World Cup with Brazil.

Either he pens a new contract ASAP, or is placed on the market where he’d still command a reasonable fee considering his world class status with plenty of road ahead at 25.

According to German expert site Transfermarkt, Vinicius is currently rated at $159.5 million (€140 million) which is pocket change for the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Saudi Arabia, and Premier League outfits.

Perez is used to getting the stars of other clubs to run their contracts down and join Real Madrid for free as we’ve seen with Mbappe, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate in recent years. Maybe Perez is getting a taste of his own medicine, and a feel for the kind of panic he induces in his counterparts across Europe.
