The Boston Red Sox and New York Mets were embroiled in similar disappointments earlier this season and both clubs fired their managers as they appeared to slip out of playoff contention.
However, the Red Sox have mounted an astounding turnaround and surged back into the playoff picture just before the trade deadline. Meanwhile, the Mets engaged in a holistic firesale as their disappointments only grew worse.
In the latest sign of the two diverging seasons, the Mets have now cut ties with a former Red Sox infielder, making it all the more clear that they are looking well into the future at this point.
New York Mets Move On From Former Boston Red Sox Infielder Right After Trade Deadline
The Mets’ Triple-A affiliate has officially parted ways with former Red Sox infielder Christian Arroyo following their trade deadline roster shuffle, according to the official transaction log.
With Arroyo batting .278 in the minors so far this season, the decision indicated that the Mets don’t really see much value in keeping a potential veteran depth addition around, as they are more interested in evaluating younger talent and regrouping for next season.
The move also ended another chapter for a player who once ranked among baseball’s more promising young infield prospects before injuries and inconsistent offensive production prevented him from establishing himself as a long-term everyday player.

“Arroyo, 31 in May, was once a notable prospect but he hasn’t been able to do much with scattered big league opportunities,” Darragh McDonald wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “In seven seasons from 2017 to 2023, he appeared in 295 games split between the (San Francisco) Giants, (Tampa Bay) Rays, (Cleveland) Guardians and Red Sox. In his 992 plate appearances, his 21.7% strikeout rate was decent but he only walked 5.1% of the time and hit just 24 home runs. That led to a combined .252/.299/.394 line and 86 wRC+.”
Red Sox fans will remember Arroyo from the 2020 to 2023 campaigns, his most recent stint in the major leagues. He was a key part of the team’s 2021 American League Championship Series run.
Earlier in the year, the veteran exercised an opt-out clause with the Mets before ultimately returning to the organization on a new deal.
“Arroyo exercised the opt-out clause in his minor-league deal Monday but quickly agreed to a new contract a day later,” CBS Sports reported at the time. “The 31-year-old infielder has slashed .304/.333/.446 with five home runs at Triple-A Syracuse this season.”
Those numbers suggested Arroyo still had enough offensive ability to contribute in the upper minors, but the Mets ultimately chose another direction after the trade deadline reshaped organizational depth.
Now a free agent once again, Arroyo will have the opportunity to pursue another organization willing to provide veteran infield depth. Given his major league experience and solid Triple-A production this season, another minor league contract remains a realistic possibility as he looks to continue a professional career that has already included stops with five organizations, including four seasons with the Red Sox.
