The Boston Red Sox head into the second half of the season with their playoff hopes very much alive as much of the American League struggles.
Though the team still could opt for a trade deadline fire sale in the next few weeks, its focus might instead remain on strengthening the major league roster for a postseason push.
At the same time, the organization continues to reshape its Triple-A depth chart as veterans search for new opportunities elsewhere. And that process recently led to the departure of long-time big-league catcher Matt Thaiss, whose lengthy career has reached another crossroads after his time in the Red Sox organization officially came to an end.
Boston Red Sox Release Veteran Catcher After Short Stint
The Red Sox cut Thaiss from their minor-league system earlier this week, according to the official transaction log.
Thaiss joined Boston during the offseason on a minor league contract, hoping to work his way back to the major leagues after spending time with multiple organizations over the previous two seasons. And his professional resume seemed to make him one of the more accomplished veteran catchers available on the minor league market when the Red Sox acquired him.
“The 30-year-old was a first-round pick out of the University of Virginia in 2016 by the (Los Angeles) Angels,” AJ Eustace noted for MLB Trade Rumors at the time. “He debuted for them in 2019, batting .211/.293/.422 with an 86 wRC+ and a .211 ISO in 164 plate appearances that year.”
As a former 16th overall pick, Thaiss seemed poised for an everyday role with the Angels, but he never reached 100 games in any single season with the club. After acquiring some other big-league options, the team ultimately moved on from him.
“In 2024, Logan O’Hoppe’s ascension to the starting catcher role limited Thaiss’s playing time,” Eustace added. “That November, the team signed Travis d’Arnaud as their new backup catcher and designated Thaiss for assignment. He was traded first to the (Chicago) Cubs and then eventually to the (Chicago) White Sox.”
After joining the Tampa Bay Rays following a stint with the White Sox last year, Thaiss became a free agent again and the Red Sox took a chance on him.
Former Boston Red Sox Catcher Sees Career Take Several Turns
After arriving in Boston, it seemed Thaiss could earn another opportunity or at least showcase his strengths through the organization’s Triple-A affiliate.
But now the Red Sox have decided to move in a different direction, releasing the veteran catcher as he hits just .201 this season and they continue evaluating organizational depth for the remainder of the year.
Despite the latest setback, Thaiss still offers the type of experience many organizations value. With years of major league service, defensive versatility and a former first-round pedigree, he could attract interest from another club seeking experienced catching depth before the season concludes.
