Doesn’t it seem that there is always an important election around the corner? The Primaries. The Runoff. The General Election. In today’s hyper-conspiratorial culture, the loser always claims fraud. For example, “The Pillow Guy” AKA Mike Lindell said he would pay for a recount of the Minnesota gubernatorial GOP primary, despite the fact that he lost by 11 percentage points and the election involved his own political party.

Even President Trump, the ultimate election denier, remained mum about Lindell’s claims.

In this article, we will review and analyze a new Second-Quarter U.S. Podcast Ranker study by Triton Digital. On Thursday, August 20, Triton Digital, a global technology and services provider to the digital audio, podcast and broadcast radio industries, unveiled insights from its Q2 2026 U.S. Podcast Ranker report that show a marketplace in motion as mid-term elections, creator-driven discovery, and habitual comedy consumption reshape the charts.

Triton Digital® is a global technology and services leader to the digital audio, podcast, and broadcast radio industries. Operating in more than 80 countries, Triton provides innovative technology that enables broadcasters, podcasters, and online music services to build their audience, maximize revenue, and streamline their day-to-day operations.

“Podcasting has become the place people go for the conversation behind the headline,” said Daryl Battaglia, SVP, Measurement Products & Strategy at Triton Digital. “Across politics, business or culture, consumers increasingly want to engage directly with hosts who offer analysis, perspective and even comic relief. That personal connection is a big part of what’s driving the movement we’re seeing across this quarter’s rankings.”

The Q2 study reveals that podcasting remains a strong and growing medium, but beneath the surface, the marketplace is shifting quickly. Political and news programming is climbing as consumers tune in ahead of the midterms, creators who built their followings on social platforms, like YouTube, are converting that reach into chart-topping podcasts, and comedy continues to widen its lead as the medium’s biggest draw.

Comedy is no laughing matter

According to data from Edison Research, comedy regularly captures the largest weekly podcast listening audience among top genres like society and culture and news. Surveys by Statista indicate that roughly 40% of U.S. podcast listeners tune into comedy shows, making it the #1 genre nationally. Comedy is a leading category across international markets as well, ranking at the top in countries like Germany and commanding massive shares in the UK.

Most importantly for brands and advertisers, Comedy is the single most-consumed genre for younger adults (ages 18–34) and maintains strong, balanced appeal across both male and female listeners. The Q2 podcast Ranker found that Comedy extended its lead, with Social Native Creators and Late-Night Brands topping charts.

Top Podcast Categories by Reach (Q2 2026):

Comedy (44.5%)

News (25.7%)

Society & Culture (21.2%)

According to Triton, Comedy widened its lead as Personality-Driven Content reshaped the field. In the category of Genres with the Largest Quarter-Over-Quarter Reach Growth, Comedy increased its share by 2.1% over the first quarter 2026. According to the study, Comedy extended its lead, as fans search for a new place to consume their favorite late night comedians.

Comedy remains podcasting’s undisputed heavyweight, accounting for 57 of the top 200 podcasts — a 29% share, the largest of any genre.

Much of that continued dominance is coming from television’s move into audio: Late Night with Seth Meyers Podcast and The Late Show Pod Show with Stephen Colbert both debuted this quarter, giving late-night audiences a way to keep up with monologues and interviews on-demand, while The Daily Show: Ears Edition returned to the chart. Stand-up-driven formats also continue to scale, with debuts from Whiskey Ginger with Andrew Santino and The Adam Friedland Show.

It’s All Politics

Political and News Podcasts Surge Ahead of the Midterms

According to the study, News posted the quarter’s largest reach gain, up 8.4% versus Q1, fueled by personality-led political shows rather than traditional news brands alone.

Several political programs returned to the chart this quarter, including Mark Levin Podcast, Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar, The David Pakman Show, Pivot, and Piers Morgan Uncensored, spanning both progressive and conservative audiences. Legacy news organizations are finding new distribution too, with Meet the Press debuting, and NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas and Serial both posting strong gains.

“With the midterm elections heating up, we expect to see a continued uptick in political and news podcasts through Q3,” said Daryl Battaglia. “Campaigns are increasing spend to reach voters across every medium this year, and podcasting is emerging as one of the most effective ways, as these audiences are actively seeking out long-form political conversation.”

The study notes that while Comedy, News and Society and Culture remain the three largest podcast categories by reach, News posted the quarter’s sharpest gain as political and opinion-driven programming pulled in new listeners.

Additionally, The Tucker Carlson Show surged into the Top 10 overall, rising to #9 from #19, marking one of the quarter’s most notable single moves and underscoring the growing pull of personality-led political commentary.

Genres with the Largest Quarter-Over-Quarter Reach Growth:

News: +8.4% (25.7% in Q2 2026 versus 23.7% in Q1 2026)

True Crime: +1.8% (17.1% in Q2 2026 reach)

Sports: +1.1% (18.5% in Q2 2026 reach)

Comedy: +2.1% (43.6% in Q1 2026)

Indie Podcasters Score a Win!

In what Triton Digital calls “The Small Reach, Big Spenders Dynamic,” Triton’s Q2 2026 Category Ranker shows that some of the strongest advertiser returns are coming from far smaller genres, which are the typical landscape of indie, niche podcasts and podcasters.

Composition indexing (compared to the average monthly podcast 18+ listener) reveals that niche categories deliver hyper-concentrated purchase intent and premium demographic traits that broad, high-reach buys can’t match.

Technology (2.3% reach, Rank #16): Indexes at 200 for Luxury Boutique Shoppers, 187 for Business Travel Intent, 161 for Senior Decision Makers, and 153 for Investable Assets of $250K+.

Business (11.4% reach, Rank #6): Leads all categories in Household Income of $100K+ (Index 141) and Life Insurance Purchase Intent (Index 156).

Fiction (2.2% reach, Rank #17): The strongest genre connection to Gen Z (Adults 18–24), indexing at 212, alongside elevated Hispanic representation (Index 154).

Kids & Family (2.1% reach, Rank #18): Indexes at 223 among Mothers, driving strong intent in Fast Fashion (157), Life Insurance (152), Home/Auto Insurance (141), Weight Loss Products (148) and Wireless Provider Switching (136).

Music (6.2% reach, Rank #10): Gained a rank versus Q1 and remains the top connector to Black/African American listeners, indexing at 238.

“Smaller genres deliver hyper-concentrated purchase intent and premium audiences that are hard to find anywhere else in audio,” said Daryl Battaglia. “For advertisers chasing a specific high-value audience — luxury shoppers, senior decision-makers, Gen Z or Hispanic listeners — that composition density can outperform a much larger, broader buy.”

Where the Data Comes From

The U.S. Podcast Ranker blends audience reach and behavioral data from Demos+, developed in collaboration with Signal Hill Insights, to paint the most comprehensive picture of podcast consumption available. This framework reveals what listeners are tuning into, what motivates them, and how their evolving habits are shaping the broader audio economy — offering advertisers, agencies and publishers fresh insight into where the next opportunities lie.

This Second-Quarter U.S. Podcast Ranker study by Triton Digital is like a wellness check on podcasting every three months. Despite the old claim that “the facts speak for themselves,” data can be interpreted in a number of ways. For those in the Comedy genre, the news is good, and the future is bright. The growth spurt of news and politics podcasts isn’t a surprise. After all, in the U.S. today, everything is political from WNBA basketball players, avocados, hummus, or quinoa that are defined as “woke,” and people working toward a Master’s Degree or PhD., who are defined in conservative circles as inciting class warfare.

Yet, the sun shines the brightest on niche, indie podcasters, who don’t have a million-strong audience, but have a much more valuable resource – delivering a hyper-concentrated intent to purchase an advertised product or service that broad, high-reach buys can’t match. I mean seriously. How many tiger ear supplements can Joe Rogan sell to increase raw masculinity?
