L to R: Peacemaker Season 2, Wednesday Season 2, Alien Earth Season 2
L to R: Warner Bros, Netflix and FX
While July was a slow month for streaming, August is coming in strong with a jam-packed lineup of new and returning TV shows. From sci-fi horror and spy thrillers to teen romances, there’s something for everyone to watch on streaming services this month.
The final full month of summer kicks off with Jason Momoa’s new Apple TV+ series Chief of War. Based on a true story, the series is set during a time when Hawai‘i’s four kingdoms were divided by war, leading warrior Ka‘iana (Momoa) to embark on a mission to unite his people.
Over on Netflix, subscribers can enjoy the long-awaited return of Wednesday — the streamer’s most popular show of all time. Lead star Jenna Ortega reprises her role as Wednesday Addams, alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley. Viewers will also be introduced to new characters, including Grandmama Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley).
Perhaps one of the month’s most exciting new additions is Alien Earth. FX’s haunting series takes place shortly before the events of Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien. Showrunner Noah Hawley told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s telling a “parallel” story to the original film. “It’s more taking elements of the original films and expanding them for my own purposes,” he explained. “It’s remarkable how little mythology there is to a franchise six movies deep.”
Also coming in August are Disney+’s Marvel Television animated series Eyes of Wakanda, the highly anticipated Outlander prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood, the second season of the teen romance series My Life with the Walter Boys and more.
