The Green Bay Packers Could Draft Cornerbacks Early And Often

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has always stressed taking the best player available when it comes to the NFL Draft.

This year, though, there could be times where Gutekunst chooses need over best player available.

The Packers need an influx of talent in their cornerback room. And Gutekunst said Tuesday that the cornerback position will be addressed often in this draft.

“That’s probably … from a numbers perspective that we sit here today, we’re going to need to add the most numbers,” Gutekunst said of his cornerback group. “So we’ll see how that goes.”

Green Bay brings back last year’s subpar starting duo of Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine. The Packers also signed Benjamin St-Juste in free agency.

No one from that trio is a No. 1 cornerback, and all three would have trouble winning a starting job with many teams.

The Packers’ depth at the position is even worse, with players like Shemar Bartholomew, Bo Melton and Kamal Hadden potentially in the mix.

Green Bay doesn’t have a first round pick, but it’s a solid year for corners and the Packers should have quality options available when they select in Round 2 (No. 52) and Round 3 (No. 84).

“We are going to add numbers there,” Gutekunst said of his cornerback room. “Obviously bringing in Benjamin along with Keisean and Carrington you’ve got three guys that have seen significant snaps in their career, and I feel good about those guys going out and playing.

“Some of our young guys, I’m interested to see with our new coaching staff how they adapt to what we’re going to ask them to do, but we do need to add some numbers there.”
