Yip yip! The first trailer for the upcoming animated film, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender just dropped and with it some very big news. The film’s original October release date has been moved up, though Paramount has not budged on returning the movie to theaters.
While an earlier release date is good news – other than the fact that I had planned to rewatch the entire original series and now have much less time to do so – I’m pretty bummed out about the movie coming direct to Paramount+. I was really looking forward to seeing this on the big screen, and I suspect that the series’ passionate fan-base would have shown up to movie theaters in droves.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will now release on July 25, 2026 on Paramount+.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is the first project released by Avatar Studios, a production company founded in 2021 as a division of Nickelodeon Animation Studio. Another series, Avatar: Seven Heavens, is slated for 2027 and will be set after the events of the original TV show and The Legend of Korra.
Avatar: The Last Airbender originally aired on Nickelodeon between 2005 and 2008 and later saw a huge spike in popularity after it came to Netflix in May, 2020. A live-action version of the series also debuted on Netflix in 2024, though it is not nearly as good as the original. The second season of the live-action series released just weeks ago, and is failing to find traction.
‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’ Leaked Online

Unfortunately, a catastrophic security breach in mid-April led to the full, high-quality final cut of the film leaking online, distributed on platforms like X (Twitter). Allegedly, the files were “accidentally” emailed to leaker. Speculation around the leak suggests it was a form of internal protest at the film being pulled from its theatrical release and moved to a direct-to-streaming format.
Paramount reportedly changed the name of the film from The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender in an attempt to make it more difficult for people to find the leak online. The leak itself received a mountain of backlash from industry professionals, animators and others for disrespecting the years of work put into crafting the film.
The leak is a big reason for the movie’s accelerated release schedule.

The new trailer released today and it looks great, though I’m still a little thrown off by the different – older – voices. Probably the most glaring are Aang’s voice – he’s a young man now instead of a little boy – and Zuko’s. Steven Yeun (Invincible, The Walking Dead) has replaced Dante Basco in the role of Zuko, though Basco will now be voicing the dragon Zym in The Dragon King sequel series to The Dragon Prince.
I think this looks fantastic. The animation is gorgeous. It makes me want a fully remastered, widescreen version of the original series (which also looks great, but this is on another level). The airbender Tagah, who appears to be an antagonist, reminds me of Zaheer from The Legend of Korra a little bit.

The film picks up years after the TV show’s conclusion and Aang, still the world’s last Airbender, wishes to find some way to restore his people. When they discover an airbender named Tagah and learn of a powerful staff that could bring back the Airbenders, the group sets off on another quest, racing to find the magical staff before a mysterious group called The Denied can claim it and break the peace Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph and Zuko fought so hard to create.
