Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is setting sail for digital streaming later this year as the film continues to break records in theaters.
Written and directed by Nolan, the filmmaker’s adaptation of Homer’s epic poem earned nearly $124 million from 3,919 North American theaters in its opening weekend frame from July 17-19, and held on to its box office crown for another weekend before the opening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31.
On Thursday, Universal Pictures announced that the film became the highest-grossing R-rated film release of all time when The Odyssey’s Wednesday worldwide tally elevated the film’s ticket sales to $1.352 billion worldwide. The record previously belonged to Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $1.338 billion worldwide in 2024.
Now a day after achieving the monumental theatrical feat, Variety reported that Universal will release The Odyssey on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Variety noted that the film will also be released on physical media, including 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD the same day.
The Odyssey will reportedly be available for both purchase and rent on PVOD, but Variety did not indicate how much each will cost. Typically, new PVOD releases cost anywhere from $19.99 to $29.99 to purchase and $14.99 to $24.99 to rent for a 48-hour period. PVOD purchases and rentals are generally available on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube Movies & TV.

In Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the Greek King of Ithaca who makes a treacherous journey home to be with his wife, Queen Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and their son, Prince Telemachus (Tom Holland), after he and his men win the Trojan War.
Like his Best Picture Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer, Nolan’s The Odyssey also employs a massive ensemble cast that includes Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Himesh Patel, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins, James Remar and the voice of Bill Irwin.
The Odyssey was greeted on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes with a 98% “fresh” critics’ score based on 145 reviews. Since that time, the RT critics’ score has dropped to 94% “fresh” based on 500 reviews, but audiences have awarded the film a 97% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 25,000-plus verified user ratings.
As of Friday, The Odyssey is still playing in 3,091 North American theaters.
