“Maggie, will you marry me?” (just kidding, just kidding)

Daryl Dixon is about to come to an end (the show, not the character) after its fourth season arrives in 2027. The Negan/Maggie team-up series Dead City is currently airing its third season, where a fourth may not happen. So, is The Walking Dead over now? Has it decayed enough where the corpse can’t even walk anymore? No, no it has not.
Speaking about the fate of The Walking Dead universe from here, The Walking Dead’s Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple (yes, the brand itself has a CCO) revealed the plans for what’s to come. Here’s an excerpt from his interview with The Direct:
“But will we see as many series? I’m not sure. You see it across Star Wars, you see it across Marvel. There’s definitely going to be more series, both shorter things and ongoing things. But it’ll probably be a bit… The rollout will be slightly slower. But more, definitely more. And there are cool things in the works. I had a lot of conversations, even this week, about that. But the urgency and the speed, like ‘Get it out, get it out, get it out.’ … It’s just a different time, but that time does allow us to get it right.”
That last bit is interesting, given that fans dislike the long waits between seasons of streaming shows now, and that is one thing these Walking Dead series have gotten right. We got three seasons of Daryl Dixon in three years and close to that with Dead City. You may recall that the original Walking Dead was doing 16 episodes a year, every year, for almost its entire run. That is borderline impossible now these days, with shows like The Pitt being a unicorn for keeping that kind of schedule.

There has long been a desire among both executives and fans for a grand reunion show to bring back characters like Rick, Michonne, Daryl and others in one series. Of course, the idea would be to get something as close to the original series as possible for maximum viewership draw, but who knows if that’s even feasible. It is a bit hard to imagine other past TWD characters getting their own spinoffs, but more series like The World Beyond or Fear the Walking Dead don’t seem like they’d be things fans rush out to see. But The Walking Dead lives on, decaying, but apparently immortal.
