Trump also claimed that the center had been “losing a fortune” for years and would continue to do so if renovations were not allowed.
Judge Christopher Cooper, who is overseeing the case, was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2014.
What Do We Know About The Kennedy Center Renovation Plan?
Earlier this month, the Kennedy Center board of trustees held a meeting at which they voted to close the building for renovations, a decision previously blocked by the court. The board, handpicked by Trump, also voted on a proposal to add an inscription to the front portico bearing the president’s name, reading “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.” The trustees argued that the inscription is meant to honor “the President’s contributions” to the center. But the plan has faced pushback from a group of plaintiffs led by Rep. Joyce Beatty, who filed a motion to block the move, calling it a “breathtaking act of defiance of Congress and of this Court” and citing the court’s earlier ruling ordering the removal of Trump’s name from the facade of the building.
Why is the Trump Administration Threatening to Demolishing The Center?
In a court filing last week, the Justice Department warned that the Kennedy Center may need ot be demolished if the court does not allow it to proceed with the renovation and the plan to inscribe Trump’s name on the building. The filing claimed that donors have only agreed ot contribute to the center’s renovation if Trump’s name is recognized and “Without those efforts, the Center will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down, with a determination to follow on what to build on the site.” The filing echoed some of the language Trump used on Sunday, claiming the building was “dangerously dilapidated” and alleging that financial issues have left it in a state of “terminal decline.” The DOJ also argued that Trump’s “efforts and prestige provide the sole hope for the Center’s financial survival, and structural renewal.”

On Thursday, Cooper presided over a hearing on the matter and listened to arguments from both sides without issuing a ruling. According to the Washington Post, the judge pushed the Kennedy Center lawyers to explain why Trump’s name needed to be added to the building. Aside from adding Trump’s name to the facade, the trustees have pushed for rebranding the center’s grounds as the “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” While Cooper has yet to rule on the motion to block the renaming, the judge suggested that the center’s September 8 deadline will likely need to be moved back. Cooper had previously ruled that the board of trustees had illegally changed the name of the building to “The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Center” and ordered the removal of Trump’s name from the facade. The judge noted that the building’s name can only be changed by an act of Congress.
