While there is a lot of comedic competition across the streaming services these days, I’m finding myself gravitating toward one show more than any other. Now, it seems critics agree, giving the returning comedy series a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with over a dozen reviews in.
That is FX’s Adults, which on the surface may look like a generic comedy of a bunch of zany Gen Z early 20-somethings hanging out in a house. I mean, it is that, but it is also extremely funny, and that’s even being one generation above them. This is season 2 of Adults, with season 1 airing back in May 2025, so we’re not that far away from that. We call that a win in the streaming era.
FX/Hulu dropped two episodes of Adults season 2 yesterday, and two more will air every Thursday until the eight-episode season is over in mid-September. It’s a great series and season 2 is no exception. That 100% Rotten Tomatoes review score comes with a 97% audience score as well. It’s a big increase from the 76% critic score and 83% audience score of season 1. And I would say it’s deserved, having seen the entire season already.
Adults has done one very interesting, extremely unusual thing in the run-up to season 2. They quite literally replaced the pilot episode of the whole series. They made a new episode called Marathon Day in which the group meets housemate Paul Baker for the first time. But it’s not just a prequel; it’s now listed as season 1 episode 1, shoving back the original pilot, The Window, to episode 2. Even among Adults fans, it’s often agreed upon that The Window puts a bad foot forward for the series.
Adults shines in creating a cast of memorable characters, with no poor performances in the bunch. It is difficult to make a relatively low-concept series like this work these days, friends hanging out, but Adults, including season 2 now, has made me laugh out loud more times than I can count, even if I’ve moved on from that more chaotic phase of my life. In this season, they also have to deal with Gen Alphas, which make them feel old even though they haven’t hit 25 yet. And I can promise you this season has the best Paul Baker content you will ever see across multiple episodes, including the finale.
It’s a great series and one that should run indefinitely, if given the chance. FX has been the home of fantastic comedies over the years, and Adults absolutely deserves a place on that list.
