Mortal Kombat II, the sequel to the 2021 adaptation of the blockbuster Midway video game of the same name, is new in theaters this weekend before it heads to streaming this summer.

Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat II made $5.2 million from 3,200 North American theaters in preview screenings on Thursday. The film expands to 3,500 venues domestically on Friday.

Karl Urban (The Boys) stars in Mortal Kombat II as Johnny Cage, a washed-up action movie star from the 1980s and 1990s who is approached after a not-so-successful appearance at a fan convention by the ethereal thunder god Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and his team of fighters to join them in a Mortal Kombat tournament. Everyone’s existence is at stake with the tournament, since the treacherous Emperor Shao Khan (Martyn Ford) is close to securing an amulet that will give him formidable powers to rule over all the realms, including Cage’s home in the Earthrealm.

Unlike Lord Raiden’s fighters, Cage doesn’t have any special powers. However, if Cage can get back in touch with the martial arts prowess before his acting career — he holds a 5th-degree black belt in karate — he just may possess the wherewithal to become the hero he was meant to be.

Rated R, Mortal Kombat II also stars Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han and Joe Taslim.

Right now, the only way you can see Mortal Kombat II is in theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes.

When Mortal Kombat II comes to the home entertainment marketplace, the first place it will be available will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand. Since Mortal Kombat II is a Warner Bros. release via its subsidiary New Line Cinema, the film should have a one-month window from its theatrical opening date to arrive on PVOD.

For example, the studio’s horror hit Weapons opened in theaters on Aug. 8, 2025, and arrived on PVOD just over a month later, on Sept. 9, 2025. Additionally, another one of Warner Bros.’ horror hits, The Conjuring: Last Rites, opened in theaters on Sept. 5, 2025, and debuted on PVOD just over a month later, on Oct. 7, 2025.

More recently, the Warner Bros. horror comedy They Will Kill You, which premiered in theaters on March 27, made its PVOD debut just over a month later, on April 28.

Should Mortal Kombat II follow the same release pattern as the above titles, then it should premiere on PVOD on June 9, since new PVOD releases typically come out on Tuesdays.

While Warner Bros. tends to follow a standard, one-month pattern with its PVOD releases, on occasion, the studio extends its theatrical to PVOD window to six weeks. For example, the hit romantic drama Wuthering Heights was released in theaters on Feb. 13, but didn’t arrive on PVOD until six weeks later, on March 31.

Should Mortal Kombat II follow the studio’s six-week release window, then it won’t be available on PVOD until sometime around June 23.

HBO Max Will Be The First Subscription Platform Home For ‘Mortal Kombat II’

Since HBO Max is a Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform, Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat II will make its streaming video on demand release on the subscription service.

Typically, it takes anywhere from 77 to 84 days from the day Warner Bros.’ films premiere in theaters to the day they arrive on SVOD on HBO Max.

Weapons, for example, premiered on HBO Max on Oct. 24, 2025, 77 days after its Aug. 8 theatrical premiere. The Conjuring: Last Rites, which premiered in theaters on Sept. 5, 2025, also took 77 days before it arrived on HBO Max on Nov. 21, 2025.

Wuthering Heights, however, took a bit longer to debut on HBO Max. The film, which opened in theaters on Feb. 13, didn’t arrive on HBO Max until 84 days later, on May 1.

Should Mortal Kombat II follow the same SVOD release pattern as the titles above, then it should be available on HBO Max on either July 24 or July 31, since new SVOD titles typically premiere on HBO Max on Fridays.
