Who Owns Marina Bay City? The Digital Asset Battle That Won’t Go Away
The dispute over Marina Bay City has now moved beyond speculation and into a far clearer territory of ownership, control, and rights.
At the centre of it is a simple question:
If a party has sold its shares and exited a joint venture, can it continue using the project’s brand, website, and digital assets?
According to multiple legal opinions surrounding the matter, the answer is no.
Buyout Completed, Rights Transferred
It is not in dispute that Kinnara agreed to exit the Marina Bay City project and sold its interest, with ownership transferring to new parties, including LUX Property Group.
Under standard corporate and commercial practice, this means:
•All associated assets of the project follow ownership
•This includes branding, intellectual property, databases, and websites tied to the development
Once a party has sold out, it no longer retains rights to represent, market, or operate under that brand.
Yet despite this, the marinabaycity.com website continues to be used by the former party.
Trademark Attempt Rejected
Adding further weight to the dispute is the confirmed fact that an attempt to register the Marina Bay City trademark in Indonesia was rejected.
This is significant for two reasons:
1.It reinforces that no exclusive personal claim over the brand exists
2.It undermines any suggestion that the brand could be privately appropriated outside the joint venture structure
In other words, the branding remains tied to the project itself, not an individual.
Parallel Entities and Investor Confusion
The situation is further complicated by the existence of similarly named entities, including a “Marina Bay Group” structure, which has raised concerns among stakeholders about:
•potential confusion in the marketplace
•the redirection of investor funds
•and the blurring of lines between official and unofficial project channels
These concerns go to the heart of investor protection and transparency.
Digital Assets: The New Battleground
In modern developments, control of:
•websites
•domains
•databases
•and social media
is just as critical as control of land titles.
Legal experts involved in the matter argue that retaining and continuing to use these assets after a buyout raises serious questions about:
•misrepresentation
•brand control
•and ongoing commercial interference
A Dispute Headed for Resolution
What remains now is not a question of narrative, but of enforcement.
If ownership has transferred, and if trademark claims have been rejected, then the continued use of:
•marinabaycity.com
•the Marina Bay City branding
•and associated marketing channels
becomes a matter likely to be resolved through legal channels, injunctions, or asset recovery actions.
