Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell’s Evil Dead Burn, is new in theaters this weekend, but for viewers who want to see the film on streaming, they can expect to wait the standard amount of time it takes for the film to arrive on premium video on demand.
Directed by Sébastien Vaniček, Evil Dead Burn opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. Evil Dead Burn is the sixth film in the franchise overall, and the third in the new direction of the franchise that began with the remake of The Evil Dead in 2013 and continued with Evil Dead Rise in 2023.
In the new film, the Necronomicon — aka the Book of the Dead — creates a hellish nightmare for a widow, Alice (Souheila Yacoub), and her in-laws following the tragic death of Alice’s husband, Will (George Pullar). As a demonic force turns Alice’s in-laws into Deadites one by one, she struggles to survive the night in the family’s rundown, remote country home.
Produced by Raimi and Tapert, and executive produced by Campbell, Evil Dead Burn also stars Hunter Doohan (Wednesday), Tandi Wright and Maude Devey, as well as Chief of War cast members Luciane Buchanan and Erroll Shand.
Currently, the only place you can see Evil Dead Burn is in theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes. When it comes to the home entertainment marketplace, the first place viewers will be able to watch it is on digital streaming via PVOD.
Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line — the studio that is releasing Evil Dead Burn — typically, but not always, follows a five -weekend theatrical-to-PVOD model. For example, the Warner Bros. releases They Will Kill You, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy and Mortal Kombat II all debuted on digital streaming five weekends after their respective theatrical premieres.
So, even though Evil Dead Burn promises a bigger hit for Warner Bros. than the titles listed above — Variety projects a domestic opening weekend for the film the $15 million to $20 million range against a $20 million budget — the film will likely follow the same PVOD release strategy.
It is worth noting that the last Evil Dead franchise film, Evil Dead Rise, played only three weekends in theaters in 2023, as the film was released on the big screen on April 21 that year and pivoted to PVOD 17 days later, on May 9. However, since theaters were still operating in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic at that time, quick releases on digital streaming by studios like Warner Bros. and Universal weren’t uncommon.
Since Warner Bros. has since moved on from the three-weekend window model, viewers who want to wait to see Evil Dead Burn on streaming will have to wait five weekends before they can see the film at home. As such, viewers can expect Evil Dead Burn to be released on Aug. 11, since all new PVOD generally come out on Tuesdays.
When Evil Dead Burn arrives on PVOD, it will be available on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube Movies & TV. Films new on PVOD generally are available to purchase anywhere between $19.99 and $29.99, or to rent for a 48-hour period between $14.99 and $24.99.
How Soon Will ‘Evil Dead Burn’ Debut On HBO Max?
After Evil Dead Burn becomes available on PVOD, its next stop in the home entertainment marketplace will be on streaming video on demand. Since Evil Dead Burn is a Warner Bros./New Line title, the Pay-1 window for the film on streaming video on demand automatically goes to HBO Max because it’s Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform.
Warner Bros./New Line typically has a 77-day theatrical-to-SVOD window for its movie releases on HBO Max.
So, for example, They Will Kill You, which opened in theaters on March 27, debuted on HBO Max 77 days (or 11 weeks) after its March 27 theatrical release. In addition, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which opened in theaters on April 17, arrived on SVOD 77 days later on HBO Max on July 3.
Should Evil Dead Burn follow the same release pattern, viewers can expect the film to debut on HBO Max on Sept. 25, since new movies released on the platform typically arrive on Fridays.
