The New York Yankees are in the middle of another high-stakes playoff push, with the club navigating the final weeks of the regular season while trying to close the gap in the American League East.
Monday marked two weeks since the trade deadline, one in which the Yankees were once again the focus of local and national speculation, as they appeared to still lack a few pieces needed to really challenge the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers for a championship.
“The deadline ultimately came and went with the Yankees, for a variety of reasons, not doing nearly as much as had been expected as general manager Brian Cashman acquired just two pieces — first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. and reserve Heliot Ramos,” Erik Boland wrote for Newsday. “After avoiding a three-game sweep in Toronto over the weekend, the Yankees stood at 69-55, including 6-6 since the Aug. 3 deadline, 5 ½ games behind the Rays in the AL East.”
But while the Yankees remain focused on their current postseason pursuit, a former member of the organization reached a very different point in his baseball journey, choosing the tail-end of the season to formally announce his retirement from baseball.
New York Yankees’ Former Infielder Officially Ends Career In Middle Of Season
On Thursday, former Yankees infielder Jon Berti took to social media to announce his retirement from professional baseball after more than 15 years in the sport.
“After a lot of thought and consideration, I have decided to retire from professional baseball,” Berti wrote on Instagram. “It’s been a hell of a journey, full of ups and downs. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities and lessons that baseball has given me over the last 15+ years.”
The 36-year-old spent parts of seven major league seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, Yankees and Chicago Cubs, establishing himself as one of baseball’s more versatile utility players. Berti ends his big-league career with a .256 career batting average, 24 home runs and 108 stolen bases.
His Yankees tenure came in 2024 after New York acquired him from Miami in a three-team trade shortly before Opening Day. Berti immediately provided the type of defensive versatility and baserunning ability that had made him valuable throughout his career and he helped push the Yankees to a World Series matchup with the Dodgers that season.
He hit .273 in 25 games with New York, recording one home run, six RBI and five stolen bases, though a left calf injury sidelined him for much of the season.

Berti ultimately returned to the Yankees in September and became an unexpected piece of the postseason roster.
During the 2024 American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals, he made the second start of his postseason career at first base despite never having started a major league game at the position during the regular season. It was an unusual assignment that highlighted exactly why Berti remained valuable: he could be trusted to fill virtually any role.
The Yankees non-tendered Berti after the season, allowing him to enter free agency. He subsequently joined the Cubs in 2025 before his professional career eventually wound down.
In his retirement announcement, Berti thanked the fans who supported him throughout his career.
“Thank you to all the fans who supported me throughout my journey,” he wrote. “I worked hard to represent the organization and city I was playing for. I appreciate all the love along the way.”
