New York Yankees left-hander Max Fried finally faced the Atlanta Braves on Friday, giving him his first opportunity to pitch against the organization that drafted him, developed him and helped establish him as one of baseball’s premier starting pitchers.
It also gave Fried a chance to reflect on the decision that changed his career trajectory less than two years ago.

Fried looked every bit like the ace the Yankees envisioned when they signed him to an eight-year, $218 million contract in December 2024.
“The lefty was the latest excellent Yankees starter — and, for a change, a rewarded excellent Yankees starter — in a 3-2, 10-inning, comeback victory over the Braves on Friday night in the Bronx, where Fried faced his former team for the first time and pitched as if he had this game circled on his calendar since signing with the Yankees on Dec. 17, 2024,” Mark W. Sanchez wrote for the New York Post.
The setting added another layer to what was already an intriguing matchup. Fried spent the first seven seasons of his major league career with Atlanta, becoming a two-time All-Star and helping the Braves win the 2021 World Series.
His departure came after the 2024 season, when Fried entered free agency and ultimately chose New York with the Braves evidently declining to match the contract offer.
The matchup was especially meaningful because Fried is working his way back from an elbow issue that cost him all of June and most of July, with the Yankees relying on him for their playoff hopes.

Fried has made just three starts since returning from the injured list this season, and the Yankees have carefully managed his workload.
“Fried is still working his way back to full health after missing all of June and most of July with an elbow ailment,” Ben Krimmel noted for SNY. “In his three outings since his return from the IL, while working his way back under a pitch count, he has surrendered four runs on eight hits and four walks over 13.1 innings. The southpaw has tallied 18 strikeouts and manager Aaron Boone has been encouraged by what he’s seen.”
That made Friday’s performance even more encouraging for New York. Fried not only handled the emotional weight of facing his former club, but continued demonstrating why the Yankees made such a significant commitment to him.
And afterward, Fried’s message toward Atlanta acknowledged the fact that he has some much history with the Braves organization.
“This one’s been circled on the calendar for a little bit,” Fried said, per Sanchez. “Definitely brought up a lot of emotions and just really was able to think about my time over there. That’s a first-class organization.”
For the Yankees, the bigger takeaway was on the mound. Fried’s return is becoming increasingly important as the club looks toward October, and his performance against his former team provided another encouraging sign that the veteran lefty can regain his ace form when the stakes rise.
Friday’s reunion may have been emotional for Fried, but ultimately, the Yankees were the team celebrating.
