The New York Yankees have seen plenty of highly regarded prospects come through their farm system over the past decade, but not every player manages to turn elite minor league tools into sustained major league success.
For Everson Pereira, the journey has included cuts from multiple organizations, waiver claims and another reminder of how quickly opportunity can disappear. Now, the former Yankees slugger prospect is getting another chance in the National League.
St. Louis Cardinals Acquires Former New York Yankees Outfielder
Just days after being placed on waivers by the Chicago White Sox, Pereira has landed with the St. Louis Cardinals as they retool for the future.
“Welcome to St. Louis, Everson!” the team announced on X. “We have claimed OF Everson Pereira off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.”
The move represents yet another stop in a whirlwind stretch for the 25-year-old outfielder, who originally signed with the Yankees as an international free agent before emerging as one of the organization’s most intriguing power prospects.
“Pereira, 25, was an international signing of the Yankees out of Venezuela,” Darragh McDonald wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “As a minor leaguer, he showed off big power potential but that also came with a lot of strikeouts. Despite the concerns, Baseball America still ranked him a top 100 guy in 2023 and 2024.”
While the Yankees hoped Pereira’s raw power would eventually translate at the major league level, consistency remained elusive, leading to his departure from the organization before subsequent stops with other clubs.
St. Louis Cardinals Bet On New York Yankees Castoff’s Power Potential
The Cardinals are now hoping Pereira can finally develop into the hitter evaluators envisioned during his prospect days.
The opportunity comes with some immediate pressure, however.
“Time will tell how St. Louis doles out the playing time,” McDonald added. “Since Pereira is out of options, he could be back in DFA limbo in the near future. If he finally clicks and hits like he has in the minors, he can be controlled for five seasons after this one.”
That combination of upside and roster risk makes Pereira an intriguing gamble for St. Louis. The Cardinals aren’t simply acquiring organizational depth — they’re taking a chance on a player whose prospect pedigree suggests there’s still untapped offensive potential waiting to emerge.
For Pereira, meanwhile, the waiver claim offers another fresh start after his latest roster setback. Whether this stop finally becomes the one where his impressive minor league power translates into consistent major league production could determine if he establishes himself as a long-term contributor or finds himself navigating another trip through baseball’s waiver wire.
