The Atlanta Braves have enjoyed the rise of star catcher Drake Baldwin, as they cycled through numerous backstop options in recent years before he seized a long-term role.
And now, after Baldwin’s ascendence drove the team to cut ties with a long-time veteran, the team has gotten an update on the former player after he was pushed off of his newest roster as well.
Longtime Atlanta Braves Catcher Cut From New Team’s Roster After Brief Stint
Journeyman catcher Chadwick Tromp became a familiar name among Braves fans across six years in the organization. Over the past several seasons, the veteran regularly moved between Triple-A and the major leagues, providing insurance when the Braves were dealing with injuries or roster shortages.
And, after spending part of the 2026 season with the Atlanta Braves before becoming a free agent again last month, Tromp received another opportunity with the Baltimore Orioles. That latest stint, however, proved even shorter than his previous one, ending after only a single major league appearance before another roster move followed.
“Tromp is sticking around as emergency organizational depth after passing through waivers unclaimed,” George Bissell wrote for NBC Sports. “The 31-year-old backstop was designated for assignment last week after going 2-for-3 with an RBI in his lone start for the Orioles after being brought back on June 22.”

Although Tromp made the most of his lone start offensively, it wasn’t enough to secure a permanent roster spot.
Instead of losing him entirely, Baltimore successfully outrighted him to Triple-A after he cleared waivers, allowing the organization to retain him as experienced catching depth without using a 40-man roster spot.
The move also marked another stop in what has become a well-traveled major league career.
“Tromp also played in 12 games for the Braves earlier in the season and has 80 big league appearances over parts of seven seasons,” Anthony Franco reported for MLB Trade Rumors. “The Aruba native is a lifetime .225/.232/.375 hitter with six home runs in 208 trips to the dish.”
And while Tromp has yet to establish himself as a long-term major league regular, organizations continue to value his experience and familiarity with handling pitching staffs.
For now, the former Braves catcher returns to Triple-A as emergency depth, ready if another need arises later this season. Although his latest major league opportunity lasted just one game, his track record suggests another call-up could arrive before long if injuries create another opening behind the plate.
