Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, a spinoff movie based on the Disney+ TV series starring Pedro Pascal, arrives on digital streaming this week after a tumultuous run in theaters worldwide.
Directed by The Mandalorian series creator Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian and Grogu is set after the events of the first three seasons of the series, which premiered on Disney+ in 2019, 2020 and 2023.
Released in theaters on May 22, The Mandalorian and Grogu stars Pascal as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian. In the film, Mando, along with his Baby Yoda-like sidekick, is recruited by Rebel Alliance Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) and the New Republic to apprehend an Imperial warlord and rescue Rotta the Hutt (voice of Jeremy Allen White), who is the long-lost son of the gangster Jabba the Hutt.
The Mandalorian and Grogu stumbled out of the gate at the box office, earning $98 million domestically from 4,300 North American theaters in its four-day Memorial Day weekend debut from May 22-25. As a result, The Mandalorian and Grogu earned the distinction of being the lowest opening for a Star Wars film under the ownership of Disney. Prior to that, Solo: A Star Wars Story earned $103 million domestically in the same Memorial Day weekend frame in 2018.
Things went from bad to worse for The Mandalorian and Grogu after that, as the film dropped a catastrophic 70% in domestic ticket sales in its second weekend at the box office. As of Friday, The Mandalorian and Grogu has earned $177.4 million domestically and $164.8 million internationally for a global box office tally of $342.2 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film had a production budget of $165 million before marketing costs.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is close to wrapping up its domestic box office run, as the film entered its ninth week of release on Friday in only 90 theaters nationwide.
‘The Mandalorian And Grogu’ Arrives On Streaming On Tuesday
Following Disney’s standard 60-day theatrical window, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, July 21, Disney recently announced.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be available to purchase for $29.99 on a variety of digital platforms, including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube Movies & TV. Since digital streaming prices are generally $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent The Mandalorian and Grogu for a 48-hour period on PVOD for $24.99.
Rated PG-13, The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives on PVOD on Tuesday. Disney also announced that the Star Wars spinoff film will be coming to 4K Ultra HD on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
