Atletico Madrid has trolled its domestic rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona after Los Blancos made a $175 million (€150 million) bid for Julian Alvarez on Tuesday evening.

“Official statement with our clarifications regarding the official statement from our neighbours Real Madrid,” began Atleti, in a tweet on X.

“1. They cut out the part of the Pope’s video where he said he was an Atleti fan too.
2. You must have confused education with gratitude, but to leave no doubt: we don’t thank you for anything.

“3. We neither study nor consider any offer for Julian. 4. How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than FC Barcelona does,” it then finished.

Real Madrid made a bid for Atletico Madrid’s striker Julian Alvarez

Atleti’s correspondence comes in response to Real Madrid publicly confirming that it made the offer for Alvarez to Atletico.

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez essentially backed up a promise, after revealing he’d make a bid of that magnitude for an unnamed player while on the campaign trail.

After winning re-election on Sunday through beating Enrique Riquelme in a presidential election, Perez has therefore tabled a proposal for Alvarez.

“Real Madrid C. F. announces that, following the meeting of the Board of Directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez,” a communicado from the white side of the Spanish capital began.

“After studying and evaluating it, Club Atlético de Madrid has thanked the offer made, made within the framework of the good relations between the two clubs, and has rejected it referring to the player’s termination clause,” it then concluded.

That release clause stands at $577 million (€500 million) on Alvarez’s current Atleti deal, which runs until June 30, 2030.

With its own post, however, Atleti has also taken a swipe at Barça. Last week, reports from Argentina explained that Alvarez has agreed terms to join the Catalans on a five-year contract.

Ultimately, however, their $116 million (€100 million) bid was believed to be far too low, and this might now be backed up by Atleti flat out refusing a much higher offer from Real Madrid.
