Michael Jackson Nearly Returns To No. 1 — But A Pop Superstar Stops Him

For the second week in a row, Olivia Rodrigo commands Billboard‘s Vinyl Albums chart. Only a few days ago, her third full-length You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love launched atop every tally published by the chart company. One frame later, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love doesn’t move an inch on any of the half dozen rosters it inhabits.

As You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love earns another stay at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart, Michael Jackson gives Rodrigo a run for her money and nearly returns to the summit. Jackson is the most successful act on the vinyl-only rundown at the moment, and a decade and a half after his passing, one of his most famous releases manages to rise to a new all-time peak.

Michael Jackson Nearly Rules With Thriller

Jackson does not land at No. 1 on this week’s Vinyl Albums chart, but he comes tantalizingly close with not one, but two full-lengths. Thriller ascends from No. 4 to No. 2. At the same time, his Number Ones compilation pushes from No. 7 to No. 3.

Thriller has already conquered the Vinyl Albums chart, but Number Ones has not. The title did initially reach its No. 3 high point not long ago – only last month – after debuting on the list in February.

Michael Jackson Dominates the Vinyl Chart’s Top 10

Four titles by Jackson appear on the 25-space Vinyl Albums chart, and amazingly, all of them live inside the top 10. In addition to the aforementioned Thriller and Number Ones, Bad leaps from No. 8 to No. 5, while Off the Wall climbs three spaces to No. 7, replacing Number Ones, which appeared in that position only one frame ago. Off the Wall sits two spaces beneath its No. 5 peak, while Bad establishes a new all-time high on the vinyl rundown.

Bad Ties Off the Wall As It Climbs to a New Peak

As Bad hits a new peak on the Vinyl Albums chart, it ties with Off the Wall, which similarly climbed as high as No. 5 and stopped there. The two bestsellers are now jointly tied as Jackson’s fourth highest-rising wins on the list.

Michael Jackson Has Charted Seven Vinyl Top 10s

Since first landing on the Vinyl Albums chart back in October 2012, several years after he died, eight of Jackson’s projects have appeared on the tally. All but one of them have spent at least a single turn within the top 10. Back in May of this year, Michael: Songs From the Motion Picture (Soundtrack) started its time on the format-specific ranking at No. 12 and did not manage to soar any higher in the two weeks it spent somewhere on the rundown.

Here are all of Michael Jackson’s top 10s on the Vinyl Albums chart.

  • Bad
  • Dangerous
  • Number Ones
  • Off the Wall
  • Scream
  • Thriller
  • Xscape

Michael Jackson Beats Every Other Act – Twice Over

In terms of number of charting releases, Jackson is the most successful act on the current version of the Vinyl Albums tally. Two other artists appear only twice, and Jackson claims as many spaces as that pair of superstars combined. Olivia Rodrigo’s You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love is comfortable at No. 1, while Sour, her debut project, keeps at No. 21. Last week, Angine de Poitrine debuted both Vol. I and Vol. II on the Vinyl Albums chart. This frame, Vol. II drops from second place to No. 11, while Vol. I descends from No. 3 to No. 12.
