Annabeth’s (Leah Sava Jeffries) adventures in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3 are going to look a bit different for show-only fans used to her being a part of the main story. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday (July 23), executive producer Dan Shotz confirmed the Disney+ adaptation isn’t diverging from her fate in Rick Riordan’s third book in the series, The Titan’s Curse, which sees her separated from Percy (Walker Scobell) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri).
However, her separation doesn’t mean fans will be seeing less of Jeffries in the show like readers saw less of her character in the book. Shotz said, “We are gonna open up the world and explore where Annabeth is and give a new look into that. It’s been nice to expand on that.”
Even with this expansion, viewers can expect the loss of Annabeth in the main group to have a major affect in the overall story for the third season.
How Annabeth’s Absence Impacts ‘Percy Jackson’ Season 3
Annabeth won’t be on a side quest of her own like Grover was before he fell into Polyphemus’ (Aleks Paunovic) clutches in season 2. She’s set to be taken, adding a layer of urgency and tension in her group’s dynamic as they work to get her back.
This will be felt most prominently between Percy and Thalia (Tamara Smart) who do not get along. Scobell gave insight into the bad blood between the demigods when speaking to Entertainment Weekly.
He shared, “They are both, as far as they know, the only children of the Great Prophecy, and therefore now it’s a question of not just who is going to be the hero of prophecy and going to save or destroy Olympus, but is it going to be me or you?”
Continuing, Scobell added, “And you throw into that mix that they don’t really know each other, and that the one person who connects them is Annabeth, and Annabeth is taken away… They both care about her, they’re both not sure about each other, but they have to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and figure out how to work with each other.”
Annabeth is typically the voice of reason in the group. Now that she’s not there, Percy will be stepping into that role, which isn’t natural to him. But with the stakes as high as they are, he has no real choice in the matter.
Annabeth’s Story So Far In ‘Percy Jackson’
With both of Annabeth’s chosen siblings—Luke (Charlie Bushnell) and Thalia (Tamara Smart)—now on the scene, the TV series has the opportunity to delve deeper into their past on the run and the bond they forged together.
At the start of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the young demigod spent much of her time following the path she’s expected to take as a child of Athena (Andra Day). Reason trumped emotion but that’s become complicated by the gravity of the situation she’s found herself in.
Annabeth has grown to care for Percy, but like Thalia, his fate is possibly tied to a prophecy that foretells of him destroying or saving Olympus. She’s lost Luke to Kronos, dooming them to fight on opposing sides of a war dividing the demigods.
As the series gets darker and their decisions carry more weight, she’s likely to be put into more grave positions that test her resolve to consider the greater good over her own safety and that of her heart.
