Phillies’ Bryce Harper Sends 4-Word Jab At Braves’ Former All-Star After Incident

Few rivalries in baseball have produced as many memorable moments in recent years as the battles between the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, two division rivals who are once again locked in a tight race for the National League East title as the playoffs come into view.

Between the franchises’ October clashes, dramatic home runs and lingering bad blood have turned nearly every meeting between the teams into must-watch television.

And fans will recall that one of the defining moments of that rivalry came recently, during the 2023 National League Division Series, when Phillies superstar Bryce Harper responded emphatically after learning that Braves’ former shortstop Orlando Arcia, an All-Star that season, had mocked him following a baserunning mistake.

“Orlando Arcia loudly cackled and openly mocked Bryce Harper in the Braves’ clubhouse following Harper’s baserunning mistake that ended Game 2 of the 2023 National League Division Series at Truist Park,” MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki wrote of the incident. “Arcia repeatedly laughed and yelled, ‘Atta boy, Harper!’ It got back to Harper, who famously stared down the Braves shortstop after each of his two home runs in Game 3 at Citizens Bank Park.”

Harper’s response on the field became one of the lasting images of that postseason, and nearly three years later, he finally shared another layer of that story.

Appearing on the “On Base With Mookie Betts Podcast” this week, Harper recalled the infamous incident.

“The place (Truist Park) is going berserk and I guess after the game (Arcia) was just, you know, saying some choice words,” Harper recalled. “Kind of got to the point where I was like, ‘Alright, well, going back to Philly baby. Come on, let’s ride,’ you know what I’m saying? Like, let’s get it. So, ended up hitting the homer against (Bryce) Elder (in Game 3) and then Brad Hand later in the game and (Arcia) knows I was staring right into him.”

Speaking on “On Base,” Harper also revealed that he was unimpressed by a more recent attempt by Arcia to get under his skin.

Reflecting on a later regular-season matchup, he offered a four-word jab that quickly caught fans’ attention.

“It was funny because … a year later he rounded first base after a home run and, like, stared at me,” Harper told Betts. “I’m like, ‘Regular season in April, bro.'”

Whether intentional or not, Harper’s four-word jab about the timing of Arcia’s response added another layer to one of baseball’s most heated ongoing rivalries. Although Arcia is no longer with Atlanta, the exchange remains one of the defining moments between the Phillies and Braves during this ongoing era. And Harper’s latest comments show that — even years later — he still remembers exactly how it unfolded and feels like he’s got an upperhand.
