The Philadelphia Phillies entered the trade deadline widely expected to pursue a significant upgrade, with much of the speculation centered on adding a right-handed outfielder capable of lengthening the lineup beyond the infield staples.
Instead, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski surprised much of the baseball world by reshaping the infield and ultimately asking Bryce Harper to return to the outfield. The move immediately altered the Phillies’ defensive alignment while giving the offense one of baseball’s premier contact hitters, but it almost never happened, according to a new report.
Philadelphia Phillies Turned To Star Infielder Luis Arraez After Trade Deadline Disappointment
As it turns out, Luis Arraez was not the player Dombrowski initially envisioned acquiring.
Reflecting on the deadline, Dombrowski explained that Philadelphia’s first priority was finding a middle-of-the-order right-handed outfielder, but the market simply didn’t cooperate.
“When you look at a right-handed hitting outfielder, as far as an everyday guy that would be a force in the middle of the lineup, we could not find one out there,” Dombrowski told The Athletic’s Jayson Stark. “There were guys that we liked that we thought would make us better, but they were almost all platoon guys. … We just couldn’t find that guy. And then you start saying, ‘OK, well, how are we going to make our offense better?’”
Dombrowski admitted that the Phillies felt forced to pivot away from their original plan after recognizing the available options didn’t match what they were seeking, arriving at Arraez as a second option.
“Dombrowski acknowledged that was not the deal he went into this deadline expecting to make,” Stark added. “When he grabbed his shopping cart, he was looking for an outfielder who hits right-handed. He came out of it with the exact opposite: an infielder who hits left-handed. It turned into one of the boldest, most outside-the-box trades Dombrowski has ever made.”

If the Phillies had any doubts about their unconventional deadline strategy, Arraez wasted little time easing them.
Making his Philadelphia debut, the three-time batting champion delivered exactly the type of offensive spark the club envisioned in his debut this week.
“Arraez stepped to the plate for the first time as a Phillie with two on and one out in the bottom of the first inning,” Paul Casella reported for MLB.com. “Following a standing ovation from the hometown crowd, Arraez ripped an RBI single to center field to plate Turner for the game’s first run. In his next at-bat, Arraez doubled to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the third.”
The early returns suggest Dombrowski’s willingness to abandon his original shopping list paid some immediate dividends. Rather than settling for a platoon outfielder, the Phillies landed one of the sport’s best pure hitters and reconfigured their defense to maximize his impact.
Whether that bold decision ultimately delivers the deep postseason run Philadelphia is chasing remains to be seen. But after entering the deadline with one plan and leaving with another, the Phillies already have evidence that thinking outside the box can produce immediate results.
