Phillies’ Bryce Harper Packs His Bag With Trade Deadline Move In Mind

The Philadelphia Phillies have made little secret of their intentions ahead of this year’s trade deadline, with a top-heavy roster in need of some reinforcements.

Sitting firmly in the National League playoff picture, the club is largely expected to pursue upgrades that could strengthen its chances of returning to the World Series.

The biggest questions center on where those reinforcements will come from. Industry observers have linked the Phillies to everything from right-handed bats to bullpen help, and the possibility of adding another impact hitter has become one of the dominant storylines surrounding the organization.

Philadelphia Phillies Superstar Bryce Harper Makes Addition To Travel Bag Before Trade Deadline

If Philadelphia lands another middle-of-the-order bat, franchise slugger Bryce Harper appears ready to adjust.

“The Phillies are convinced first base is where Harper, 33, should remain,” Matt Gelb wrote for The Athletic. “Still, he stuffed an old thing in his travel bag this week. ‘I brought my glove,’ Harper said, ‘just in case they make a trade.’ Harper has not used that outfield glove in a game since April 16, 2022.”

The report highlights Harper’s willingness to prioritize roster construction over personal preference if the front office identifies an upgrade at first base, a message he has sent before, although president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has virtually ruled out a move back to the outfield.

Harper’s extra glove might be more of a totem than a practical need, but there’s little reason to doubt that the franchise slugger would go to great lengths to secure a career-first World Series championship.

“Harper is prepared for anything,” Todd Zolecki wrote for MLB.com. “So, if the Phillies somehow find a slugging first baseman in the next few days, he said he is ready to move to right field again. He has been willing to move there in the past.”

Bryce Harper Sends Philadelphia Phillies’ Front Office A Trade Message Ahead Of Deadline

Harper might not really expect a new first baseman, but he was direct that Dombrowski and the front office should be looking to add win-now talent.

“Everybody in baseball kind of knows what we need,” Harper added, per Gelb. “So there’s players out there that are available, and I think we have a good opportunity to go get the guys we need.”

Few stars of Harper’s stature volunteer to change positions in the middle of a pennant race, but his comments suggest winning remains the priority and the expectation for Dombrowski. Harper added that he had not had a direct conversation about the looming deadline with the executive.

Whether the Phillies ultimately acquire a first baseman or address another area of need, Harper has already made one thing clear: he’s preparing for every possible scenario. Packing an outfielder’s glove for the road trip may seem like a small gesture, but it also serves as a reminder that Philadelphia’s roster could look significantly different once the Trade Deadline passes.
