The Philadelphia Phillies entered the second half firmly in contention for another National East division title, enjoying a sudden turnaround under interim manager Don Mattingly after a rough start.
Now, while the major league club focuses on getting its veteran superstar core back to October baseball, the organization continues making difficult decisions throughout its farm system.
Those roster moves extended to the Florida Complex League this week, where the Phillies parted ways with one of their youngest and most promising infield prospects after a challenging developmental stretch.
Philadelphia Phillies Suddenly Release Young Infielder In Middle Of Season
Last week, the Phillies officially released 18-year-old shortstop Jose Familia in the middle of a poor season at the plate, according to the official transaction tracker.
The move ends Familia’s time in the Phillies organization less than two years after he emerged as an intriguing young international prospect with the organization. While the Dominican teenager never developed into one of the club’s elite prospects, evaluators believed his age, size and defensive tools could give him some long-term upside.
“Familia only hit .187 in 2024, but he’s a very good young shortstop defender and his frame portends pretty serious future strength, as he’s a broad-shouldered 6-foot-2,” Eric Longenhagen wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “This is a name on the edge of the radar just in case Familia gets strong.”
For an organization with a significant lack of top-level prospects, the decision to cut ties with a potential future infield option was a sudden surprise, but Familia was hardly producing at the plate. He batted just .207 in 116 at-bats this season.
Philadelphia Phillies Cut Ties With Young Shortstop Amid Struggles
Familia’s struggles at the plate from 2025 continued into 2026, making it difficult for the Phillies to justify keeping him in the organization despite his youth.
“Familia is a lanky shortstop who got pushed to the FCL complex before he was ready,” Matt Winkelman wrote for Phillies Minor Thoughts. “His defense was poor, and he struggled to make contact. All that said, he won’t turn 19 until August, so he does actually have time to make some improvements.”
Familia’s age remains perhaps the most notable part of his story. At just 18 years old, it seems likely that he will get more opportunities to prove himself in affiliated baseball.
But the Phillies ultimately decided that would have to take place with another organization, electing to free up a roster spot while continuing to invest in other young infield prospects. Familia now becomes a free agent with plenty of time to continue his professional career elsewhere, hoping another club believes the raw athletic tools that once made him an intriguing prospect can still be developed into a major league future.
