Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid announced another big summer transfer for the first team via its X account and official website on Monday evening.

“Real Madrid CF and Sport Lisboa e Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Alvaro Carreras, who is linked to our club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2031,” the statement began.

Madrid explained how Carreras was once a La Fabrica youth academy player from 2017 to 2020, where he played in what are known as the Cadet and Juvenil categories in Spain.

From Premier League giant Manchester United, he then joined Benfica after being voted the Red Devil’s best U23 player in the 2021/2022 season.

At Benfica, Carreras won the Portuguese League Cup and also put on impressive displays in the Champions League.

He was complimented for keeping Lamine Yamal relatively quiet in continental clashes against FC Barcelona, and will endeavour to repeat this phenomenon amid his new club hopefully ending the Catalans’ newfound domestic dominance which saw it sweep a Spanish treble last term.

Madrid further noted how Carreras’ presentation will take place at the club’s HQ at 13.00 local time on Tuesday afternoon.

Before that, the 22-year-old will pen a six-year contract to confirm his return to a boyhood club and therefore provide positional rivalry to the likes of Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia.

Signed for a reported $58 million (€50 million), Carreras is Madrid’s third big name signing of the summer.

First came Dean Huijsen, who was released from his Bournemouth contract after Perez triggered a $67 million (£50 million) release clause before the trophyless – in terms of major silverware – 2024/2025 campaign had even been wrapped up.

Not waiting until he became a free agent on June 30, Madrid then paid a reported $11.6 million (€10 million) to land now former Liverpool right back Trent-Alexander Arnold early so that he could play in the Club World Cup.

Meanwhile, Madrid has also been linked to potentially buying Angelo Stiller yet has reportedly cooled off on Nico Paz.

Carreras signing shows further commitment to improving Real Madrid’s defense

To compliment the Huijsen and Alexander-Arnold signings, Real Madrid landing Carreras shows that Perez is indeed committed to improving a back line which leaked goals under Carlo Ancelotti last season.
