One of publishing’s most obsessively followed adaptation races has finally reached its destination. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed a series order for Fourth Wing at its annual Upfront presentation in New York City this week, announced by executive producer…Michael B. Jordan? Executive producer Michael B. Jordan!
The show will stream on Prime Video, and the creative team assembled around it is one of the more formidable ones in recent prestige television.
What The Fourth Wing TV Show Is About
Fourth Wing is the first novel in Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series, published in 2023, and became one of the fastest-selling fantasy debuts in recent publishing history. This was of course, part of a wider BookTok-driven boom that put romantasy at the centre of mainstream commercial fiction.
The story follows Violet Sorrengail, a young woman forced by her military commander mother to enter Basgiath War College rather than pursue the quieter scholarly life she had planned. Basgiath trains dragon riders, the elite warriors of the kingdom of Navarre, and the college is explicitly designed to kill cadets who aren’t strong enough to survive it.
Violet enters as one of the smallest and most physically vulnerable candidates in her year, and the series that follows involves her navigating survival, power, politics, and a romance with Xaden Riorson, the brooding and morally complicated wingleader who becomes both her greatest threat and her primary interest.
The Empyrean series has been conceived as five books, with Fourth Wing (2023), Iron Flame (2023), and Onyx Storm (2025) already published, per Deadline.
Who Is Making The Fourth Wing Series
Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan executive produces through his Outlier Society banner, alongside Elizabeth Raposo. Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy also executive produce through their Kilter Films banner, with Joy directing the first episode, per Deadline.
Showrunner and writer Meredith Averill, who wrote the adaptation, executive produces through the production. Averill’s television credits include The Haunting of Hill House and prematurely ended Locke & Key, and she joined the project as new showrunner last autumn, at which point Deadline reported the long-gestating adaptation finally kicked into gear.
Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark executive produce via Premeditated Productions. Rebecca Yarros executive produces and has given the project her public endorsement — “these are the people who understand what a story means to its readers,” she told the Upfront audience.
Amazon MGM Studios and Outlier Society acquired the rights to the Empyrean books in a competitive auction around the time of the first novel’s publication in 2023. Fourth Wing was one of three series Jordan presented at the Upfront under Outlier Society’s overall TV deal with Amazon MGM Studios, alongside The Greatest and Delphi.
What Michael B. Jordan Has Said About The Show
Jordan has been careful not to overpromise. In a January 2026 interview with Deadline, he emphasised the team’s awareness of what the fandom expects while declining to confirm specifics. “We are making sure that this is going to be an exciting show that delivers on all of the things the fans want and some of the things that they won’t be expecting either. But trust me, I know how beloved this franchise IP is, and we’re diligently — we’re in the lab, we’re cooking up. We got it. It’s coming.”
In a February 2026 interview with the BBC, he addressed casting directly, stressing there would be no “obvious choices” when it came to filling the roles (although I’m sure the thousands of TikTok fancasts would like to have a word).
Speaking at the Upfront itself, he described the project’s core ambition plainly, “This project required the right creative partner,” adding that Joy had articulated the goal as building “a cinematic world” designed “to deliver the series this fandom deserves,” per Deadline.
Is Fourth Wing Casting Confirmed?
No cast has been announced. The series is still in early development, and as of Jordan’s January 2026 Deadline interview, writing was ongoing and production had not begun. Fan casting for Violet and Xaden has circulated extensively on social media since the rights acquisition was announced in 2023, but neither Jordan nor the production have confirmed any names.
In recent times, no production has satisfied the fancast more thoroughly than the Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, although the movie has yet to come out.
What The Fourth Wing Fandom Should Expect
Showrunner Averill articulated the challenge and the opportunity clearly at the Upfront. “Rebecca’s books have become one of the fastest-selling franchises of the 21st century, with a fandom so passionate, so devoted, they don’t just read these books, they live in them,” she said. “The emotional stakes are sky high, the battles are epic, power dynamics are thrilling, and underneath it is so much humor and heart and a romance that will consume you,” per Deadline. The plan, if the first season succeeds, is to adapt the remaining novels across multiple subsequent seasons, per Deadline — an ambition that reflects both the size of the existing readership and the scale of the world Yarros has built across the three published books.
No premiere date has been announced for The Fourth Wing TV show.
